WELCOME
This student handbook is a guide that can be used by students, parents and teachers as a source of information concerning the educational opportunities offered at LaSalle High School.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

This handbook provides each student and parent with a guide of school policies, rules and regulations.  As always, there are areas that students and parents may find unclear or omitted.  The principal and office staff  encourage each student and parent to come by and discuss any item in this handbook or items not covered.  We are here to see that all students receive the best possible education, and effective communication between school, students and parents will facilitate the accomplishment of this goal.

                                                                                                       Mrs. Ronda Richardson

MISSION STATEMENT

Through class and group activities in all areas, the respect for authority is stressed.  The faculty strives through lessons and examples to teach that change is good and essential to progress, but that change be brought about by offering a better plan, rather than merely destroying the existing plan.

The faculty feels the need for continuous professional growth to acquire new facts about the nature of learning, the methods of teaching, the evaluation of students’ efforts, the change in guiding principles and practices, and the responsibilities of the teacher in the development of the individual to better cope with life’s situations.

PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE

The personnel of LaSalle Parish believes in the worth of each student and that while each is unique, every child can learn and deserves the encouragement and environment conducive to learning and which stimulates interest in successful student performance.

A collaborative relationship exists between administration and staff.  We strive to keep abreast of recent innovations and to implement proven strategies that contribute to effective teaching practices.

The LaSalle Parish School Board assures the public that the best qualified personnel are employed, that the evaluation program promotes the professional growth of the staff while providing support to new personnel.

STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT

The staff of the LaSalle Parish School System dedicates itself to equal educational opportunity and excellence in the classroom.  We believe that all children can learn and strive to teach every child, emphasizing quality instruction and student achievement.  The staff commits to the research-based effective school model.  This requires a clear school mission, strong instructional leadership, a safe orderly environment, high expectations and a system to measure achievement.  This commitment enables the staff to dedicate its energies to improving student achievement.

CHECK OUT PROCEDURES

When it is necessary to check out students during the school day, the parent or guardian must come to the office and sign the check out sheet, relieving the school of any responsibility for the rest of the school day.

OFFICE

Unless given permission by a school staff member, students are not allowed to go behind the front office counter or enter the teachers’ lounge.

TELEPHONE

The school telephones are limited to school business.  Students are not allowed to use the school telephone.  In the case of student illness or emergency, students, with the permission of a staff member, may use the FRONT OFFICE TELEPHONE ONLY!

STUDENT TARDIES

At the beginning of each class period, a tardy bell will ring.  A student entering class after this bell is tardy.  ALL tardies will be handled  in accordance with the LHS Discipline Policy.

MAKE-UP WORK

Students who have excused absences, but fail to make-up the work missed within three school days, will fail to receive credit for the work missed.  It is the responsibility of the student to check with each teacher and find out if he or she has missed any class work.

The teacher is responsible to provide the student with an opportunity to make up work missed.  If it becomes necessary for a teacher to request that a student come from another class to complete make-up work, permission from the other teacher must be acquired.  Please understand that the other teacher may deny the request.

Students who have unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up work or tests.

STUDENT ABSENCES

Each teacher should check his or her roll carefully after the tardy bell has rung at the beginning of each period.  If a student is absent from class, an “A” should be recorded in the appropriate column of the grade book.  At the beginning of first period, the names of all absentees should be recorded in the JPAMS system. A composite list with daily announcements will be returned to each teacher. No returning absentee should be admitted to class without an admit slip.  The student is to present this admit slip to each of his/her teachers for the remainder of the school day.

Each teacher shall sign the back of the admit slip.  The student’s last teacher of the day will keep the admit slip and send it to the office after class.

If a student presents an excused admit slip, the teacher will circle the “A” in his/her records.  An uncircled “A” will suffice to identify an unexcused absence.  A number should be placed next to the uncircled “A” if it counts against a student’s allowed absences.  When the number reaches 5, 10, or 15 unexcused absences, the student’s name should be sent to the office for parent notification.

A student is not considered “excused” until he or she provides a valid excuse from his/her parent or guardian.  If no such evidence is provided, the student is given an admit slip marked “unexcused”.  If the student provides a valid excuse WITHIN FIVE SCHOOL DAYS, another admit marked “excused” will be issued.  AFTER FIVE SCHOOL DAYS, NO EXCUSE WILL BE ACCEPTED.  ALL DAYS OF ABSENCE WILL BE OFFICIALLY UNEXCUSED AFTER FIVE DAYS.

The only reasons for which “excused” admits may be written are:

     1.  Illness of the student                                                   4.  A catastrophe

     2.  Illness or death in the immediate family                 5.  School sponsored activities

     3.  Recognized religious holidays

ALL absences are to be recorded in the teacher’s grade book.

It sometimes becomes necessary for parents to arrange to have a student absent from school when such absence does not meet one of the criteria for an “excused absence.”  In such cases parents should contact the principal in advance, and the student must agree to make up all work missed, period for period, either before the absence occurs or within three days after the absence.
